Portuguese driving license
There are several reasons why you should get a Portuguese driver's license upon arrival in Portugal. E.g. you will want to expand your group over time or you will want to become a professional driver, either as a passenger or goods delivery. Simply put, it gives you more options, freedom, and it doesn't cost that much.
How to proceed:
- Prepare your NIF, driver's license from your country, rental agreement, proof of income or proof of cash (min. 1000 €) in a bank account and go to handle the so-called "Communication of residence with City Council", i.e. the request for the issuance of a certificate by the Portuguese city office that you have permanent residence here and are a resident of Portugal. You pay €18 for issuing a certificate.
- You will need a medical certificate to drive motor vehicles (the so-called certificate for IMT), which costs €25-50 depending on the location and the doctor and takes up to 10 minutes.
- In order to apply for a medical certificate, you must have an SNS number. If you don't have one, here is how to get one ask it.
- Load the page www.imtonline.pt.
- In the top right menu, click on "Troca de Títulos Condução Estrangeiros" and then click on "Driving license exchange".
- Select the first option "Driving licenses issued by a European Union or the European Economic Area Country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)" and click "Read more".
- Then in the paragraph "What if my driving license does not have an expiry date?" click on the "here" link, which will redirect you to the form for entering data and uploading documents.
- If your driving license will only cover groups A and B, you do not need to attach a medical psychological examination, which is required for professional groups such as C.
